Every August, RoadPeace leads the UK in observing National Road Victim Month, a dedicated time to remember those who have lost their lives or been seriously injured on our roads, to stand with the families and individuals affected, and to call for urgent action to prevent future tragedies.
Why August?
National Road Victim Month was founded by RoadPeace in 1998. The month was chosen to honour the memory of two pivotal figures whose stories symbolize the ongoing impact of road danger:
- Princess Diana, who tragically died in a car crash in Paris on August 31, 1997.
- Bridget Driscoll, the first recorded pedestrian death by a car in Britain, who was killed on August 17, 1896.
Their legacies remind us why we must keep working for safer roads and compassionate support for victims and families.
The Scale of Road Harm in the UK
Since 1926, over 500,000 people have died on Britain’s roads. Every day, on average:
- 5 people lose their lives in road crashes
- 80 people suffer serious injuries
These are not just statistics, behind each number is a person, a family, a community forever changed.
How RoadPeace Supports Victims and Families
At RoadPeace, we are proud to be the national charity dedicated to supporting anyone affected by road crashes. Our services include:
- Peer support and counselling for bereaved families and injured survivors
- Practical guidance and legal advice during investigations and inquests
- Providing Remember Me plaques to mark places of loss and remembrance
- Hosting memorial events and ceremonies to honour those taken too soon
- Campaigning for safer roads and policies that save lives
